It's been a while since I have posted and I have a lot to update you on, as we have been very busy in Spanish class! At the end of October we spent some time learning about the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos. This is a very special and important holiday for families. Día de los Muertos translates to Day of the Dead in English and takes place on November 1st and 2nd.
Sometimes this holiday gets confused with Halloween because it is celebrated around the same time of year. However, Día de los Muertos is very different from the Halloween holiday. Mainly because it is NOT a scary holiday at all. Day of the Dead is filled with love, happiness, light, laughter, color, and music, and is all about family. Families in Mexico take time to remember and their ancestors who have died and celebrate their memory. They create ofrendas in their homes and decorate them with orange marigold flowers, candles, food, and pictures of their loved ones. It is an incredibly beautiful holiday filled wth family and love. One of our class activities involved creating a book with basic information about Día de los Muertos. In our discussions about the celebration, we also talked about the movie Coco, which many of the students have seen. This movie does a FANTASTIC job representing Mexican families, what this holiday means to them, and how they celebrate. I would highly recommend the movie as an accurate portrayal of Mexico and its culture. We also started a new unit this week, which is all about La Familia (Family). We started by learning the words for four family members in Spanish. We also learned the signs for the words as we went so that we can have a movement to go with each word. Below you will see the words we learned this week, along with the signs for each. See if your child can tell you the words in Spanish and show you the signs as well!

This week in Kindergarten we have been practicing phrases in Spanish to express basic needs. We learned a new song, and are using the vocabulary to express what we see in pictures. Here are the expressions we are currently practicing: Tengo hambre. = I'm hungry. Tengo sed. = I'm thirsty. Tengo calor. = I'm hot. Tengo frío. = I'm cold. Students also did a partner activity to practice saying the phrases to each other. One student said a phrase in Spanish, while the other student circled a picture to match what their partner said. They did a great job communicating with each other in Spanish! Below you will see pictures of students engaged in our partner activity, as well as a link to the song we've been singing in class. Enjoy! This week our Student Teacher, Señorita Waldo did an activity with us about el otoño (Fall) y las hojas (leaves). Students recited a poem in Spanish about a tree losing its leaves and acted it out together. They then learned and practiced words to describe leaves in Spanish:
grande = big mediano = medium pequeño = small amarillo = yellow anaranjado = orange rojo = red café = brown The students really enjoyed the activity and learning with Señorita! This week students created a poster to introduce themselves and share how they are feeling in Spanish by using the phrases Me llamo (My name is) and Estoy (I am feeling). They have done such a great job learning and using this new vocabulary and this was a great activity to pull it all together. Look for these posters to come home sometime next week!
This week in Kindergarten we worked on practicing our greetings and emotions vocabulary. First, we did a whole-class activity where we asked each other one at a time ¿Cómo estás? and then students answered based on a picture card. They did a great job remembering their emotion words!
Several classes were also able to play a greetings board game to practice the expressions Hola, Buenos Días, Buenas Noches, and Adiós. The kids had a blast! This week we have been learning how to answer the question ¿Cómo estás? (How are you?) in Spanish. We've learned 5 different words that we can use to express how we're feeling:
bien = good así-así = okay mal = bad feliz = happy triste = sad We also learned a movement that goes with each vocabulary word. Have your child say the words for you and show you the movements too! For a fun way to practice these vocabulary words at home, look at pictures of people in a book or magazine and have your child say the Spanish word that matches how the person is feeling. Or, you can give the child a situation in English and then ask them ¿Cómo estás? (koh-moh eh-stahs) For example: You just kicked the winning goal in your soccer game. ¿Cómo estás? See if they can come up with some situations for you too! Hola! This week in Spanish class we learned and practiced different ways to greet someone in Spanish:
This week we practiced the words gracias (thank you) and de nada (you're welcome). We did an activity where we passed an object around a circle and said the words to each other to show our good manners. We also sang along to this song from one of my favorite movies. The kids had a blast singing along and saying "de nada" just like Maui! We have been having a lot of fun starting out the year in Spanish class! The Kindergarteners have all been very enthusiastic about learning Spanish and are doing a great job so far. We have spent time this past week learning some Spanish and also how things work in Spanish class.
First, we were introduced to the words for several colors in Spanish, since that's how our tables are labeled in the classroom. We learned: Azul Rosado Verde Amarillo Rojo Azul Claro Have your child tell you which is his/her table! Then, we learned the attention signal that Señora Deprez uses in class. When she needs our attention, she will call out: ¿Qué pasa, calabaza? And we will respond: Nada, nada limonada. See if your child can show you what this sounds like at home! We have had a great first week of Spanish! First, we learned the word Hola and used it to greet each other. Then, we learned how to introduce ourselves in Spanish using the phrase Me llamo. We made nametags in Spanish and took turns using the phrase to introduce ourselves to the rest of the class. Here is a fun song I played for the students this week to introduce the concept of introducing yourself in Spanish. Enjoy! |
